Cape towm. The West Coast stretches from Yzerfontein in the south to Strandfontein in the north. Formerly one of the hidden gems of South Africa, this hub of the Southern African commercial fishing industry is becoming an increasingly popular destination for visitors. For most of the year however, it maintains its wild, somewhat desolate atmosphere that sets it apart from the lusher regions of the Western Cape. Most people know the West Coast best for the annual wildflower display that draws crowds with cameras to capture the colourful daisies and other flowers – over 1000 species in total – carpeting the fields each spring (from July to September, depending on the rains). Bird watching, whale watching, kayaking, wine tasting, fishing – these are just some of the delights awaiting visitors. Nature lovers and those wanting to really get away from it all find themselves a spiritual home in this special place.
